As part of the response to the Town’s rapid growth, a proposal was introduced to replace outdated water meters with advanced smart meters. This initiative sparked broader discussions about the necessity of upgrading the Town’s entire IT infrastructure. 

The current systems consist of an aging, "daisy-chained" network infrastructure with two primary, independently operating server and communications rooms at Town Hall and the Police Department; one operating server room at the Water Plant operating SCADA system with a direct connection to the Wastewater Treatment Plant; and six additional satellite locations – the Arena, Heritage Museum, two Child Care Centres, Public Works and Cemetery. The software environment is a blend of on-premises and remote solutions, including an RDS environment for the financial system, alongside cloud-based applications such as Citywide Asset Management, Office 365, and recreation software. 

The proposed transition to smart water meters highlighted the absence of an integrated, future-ready IT infrastructure capable of meeting the demands of an evolving community. As the Town modernizes, a robust IT foundation is essential to support and sustain future technological advancements while enhancing efficiency, safety, and service delivery.
